Well I have a lot to tell you again. I went to Pori, and Helsinki 2 weeks ago and I have 2 Finnish Cuisine classes to tell you about.
First, I will tell you about our trip to Pori. I went with the other Fine Arts students two friday's ago and we took a bus directly there, it took us 3 hours to get there. Pori is located on the west coast of Finland close to the ocean. We first went to an art school there that is a branch of an art school in Helsinki, the whole school is in an old cotton factory and is a very interesting and neat setting for the school. Below are some pictures of it.
They are planning to renovate this area for exhibitions, but the old cotton factory machines are still there, and it was interesting to see.
This is a picture of the whole school, it is not just a Fine Art school, but also has other departments.
We also went to an international art exhibition at the art gallery. Below are pictures from that.
This was a Canadian artist!
This artist was from the UK, I can't remember any of the names of the artists though, I should have written them down! This was actually not an artwork, but a historical artifact that they found when they dug for the foundation for the museum, and they found all kinds of old Viking artifacts here which are now in the Pori museum. They had to leave it here because it is a historical artifact. I found it very interesting!
We also toured around Pori, its a very nice city and is a lot older than Lahti. There is also a river that runs through it. Below are pictures I took around the city.
In this picture is Sam and Radka, Radka is in Physiotherapy but she wanted to go on the trip with us, I think she had a good time!
In this picture from left to right is Anna Sophia from Portugal, Tinalisa from Finland, and Sam from England.
It was a beautiful day for the trip!
The next day me and my roomate when to Helsinki and toured around the city and went out for dinner. It only cost 7 euros for the train and it took one hour, the train went very fast! Below are pictures from that trip.
This is what I first saw of Helsinki when I stepped out of the train station, pretty exciting!
These were neat isicle lights hanging.
Wouter, (my roomate from Belgium), on the way to the harbour front.
Me on the way to the harbour front.
At the harbour front. It was really beautiful, but also really, really cold that day! And it felt a lot colder because we were so close to the ocean and it was so damp as well as being cold.
This is the Helsinki train station.
This is the view from inside the train station where we got our train, (high speed train)! It was a fun trip, but it was really, really cold! I plan to go back there a few more times and see the museums and in the spring, because it is really beautiful then I have heard.
I also have 2 weeks of Finnish Cuisine to tell you about. The first week we made seasonal food (shrove and Easter). I actually do not have the exact recipes for this week so I can't be as detailed as I usually am.
This was the breakfast buns, which were kind of like pancakes, but with rye flour in it as well, and it was more savoury. The orange stuff on top was caviar (fish eggs), and it was my first time trying them, they were quite salty, but I loved the colour!
This was the main course. Our group made the lamb with red wine sauce, and there were potatoes, beans, and I took more breakfast buns, it was delicious!
This is me and Anja. She is from Germany and we were in the same group throughout the course.
I can't remember what was in this desert, but it was good too!
The next week of our cuisine class, we went cooking in nature to the Messila campground just outside of Lahti. It was really cold but also very fun! There were also people there from a TV channel in Finland and they filmed us the whole evening, they were from MTV3 (not Music television, but channel 3 in Finland), and they told us the show that we will be in will be aired in August of this year, so I will be on TV! We cooked our dinner in a neat Scandinavian cabin, (the roof went all the way to the floor), and there was a big fire in the middle for cooking. Below are some pictures of this week's cuisine class.
We cooked our whole meal on this big fire. We had no idea that we were going to be filmed for television.
I also have some more random pictures that might interest you.
This is me and Radka (from the Czech Republic), she is actually not in art, she is in physiotherapy, but she wanted to join our figure drawing class in the evenings.
This is me, Radka, and Chiara (from Italy), Chiara is a Fine art student.
In this picture from left to right is Carina (from Germany), Julia (from Germany), and Wouter (my roomate). They wanted my to show them how to ski, I guess they thought I would know since I am from Canada, lol! This picture was taken right before they went skiing.
These are sunset pictures I took on the lake in Mukkula.
These are some buried cars I saw on my way home from shopping at my residence. I don't think they will be used for a while!
On the same day that we cooked out for Finnish Cuisine in Messila, there was also a snow sculpture competition in Lahti.
I hope you have enjoyed my blog! There will be more posts to come!
